Young Thug - Keep In Touch

The new winner of the I’ve been blasting this song on repeat for the last half hour and still counting award. Mr. Thug incorporates cadences of auto-tune druggy singing Lil Wayne and Wyclef Jean into a magical combination over a heavenly poppish beat. He even shouts out Ca$h Out of “Cashin’ Out” fame, which is on pace to be #1 record on urban radio as soon as next week. This sweet gesture gets Young Thug brownie points if you’re wondering. At this point based on the ear test there is a 53% chance Epic Records signs Young Thug, and if they pushed this record as a single I would not be mad at them.

One of my favorite songs this year, definitely my favorite from the album. I’m surprised I haven’t heard more from him.

Random fact, when I first followed him on twitter the only other person I followed who also followed him was … Chief Keef.

This beat is tremendous, distant, dying violins and little squeaky things under the drums. More not-great singers trying sing-song flows and hooks would be okay with me, too.

It comes from a show called Roc, which was, for my money, one of the most accurate portrayals of black Americans ever to air on television. As you’ll see, Roc and his family aren’t drug dealers or wealthy gynecologists; they’re just people with the same needs and interests as any other American trying to carve out a nice life. They laugh and have disagreements about politics—one of the characters in this episode is even a black female Republican who can intelligently back up her conservative stances! Imagine, a show that actually gives you a sense of the breadth of the black experience, the normalcy of the whole thing.

Watch this, compare it to the other ways blacks are treated on TV, and see if you can believe this program aired almost 20 fucking years ago to the day.

- I don’t know exactly what the grading scale for the fourth grade level of the FCAT Writing test was, but this precipitous drop being based on kids not being able to spell things or form sentences or develop arguments makes me think that the test is something the Internet, in general, would not pass.

Obama’s “evolution” talk, in his personal statement expressing his personal thoughts on gay marriage that is obviously supposed to be the carrot for progressives — who will see one presidential candidate who is in favor of gay marriage and one who is not — without the outright risk of social conservatives having a direct quote about how gay marriage is and should be a constitutionally-guaranteed right (though it is and will be, if the Prop 8 decision was precedent-setting, right?) to feed to the pulpit, is a cop-out, and the sort of thing that can allow Romney to look back at Romneycare and say “I thought it was a good decision at the time, but time has allowed me the luxury of perspective, and my stance on it has evolved.”

But it’s also a trap: “evolution” connotes progress, and connects to science and rationalism, even for the people who think evolution being a theory means it is not fact, and suggests that Obama is moving forward. It also suggests that people not moving in that direction are moving in the wrong direction, which people know. If Romney plays “my position evolved because it was wrong for Massachusetts and even more wrong for our country,” Obama plays “I realized I was wrong about gay marriage and that civil unions created a separate and inherently unequal institution for Americans who deserve the full extent of the rights guaranteed by our Constitution.”

There’s also going to be a flap at some point about some prominent black figure taking umbrage at casting gay marriage and gay rights issues in the same light as the civil rights movement, but I don’t think Obama or Dems are going to shrink away from that. The perfect, in this case full recognition of how deeply slavery and its heirloom discriminations scars the American soul and corresponding effort to make things right, is the enemy of the good, which is the re-election of the one of two viable candidates who will only capitulate to corporate and socially conservative interests some of the time.
