Years later, when I was in college, I was hanging out with this guy; he was cute and he knew a lot about rap music, so obviously I kind of liked him. “Who’s your favorite rapper?” he asked me.
That’s always a loaded question. I didn’t want my answer to seem too obvious, but at the same time I didn’t want to lie. “I like a lot of different stuff. UGK, Clipse, Kanye. But, honestly? My favorite rapper is Jay-Z.” He leaned over to the laptop, and “Hard Knock Life” started playing.
“Everybody loves this song. I bet you know every word.” He was right on both counts. (He also turned out to be a white guy who says the n-word and makes rape jokes, so nothing ever happened, but that’s a whole other story).
